The Literacy Center of Flagstaff, AZ

img_2598The Literacy Center of Flagstaff, AZ displays volunteerism at its finest.  Volunteerism has been a part of our national heritage since before the Civil War.  The Huffington Post and the U.K.-based Charities Aid Foundation in December of 2014 states, “About a billion people around the world give their time to help others.”  In their March 2015 edition, 24/7 Wall Street announced, “Nearly 63 million Americans volunteered a total of roughly 7.7 billion hours in 2013, a contribution estimated to be worth approximately $173 billion.”  With Arizona literacy rates at alarmingly low levels, the Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County provide a necessary service to our community and state.

Talking to Ari Wilder, Executive Director of The Literacy Center, I realized immediately her passion and heart to educate and serve those with literacy needs in our community.  Ari and the Program Manager, Dianna Sanchez, are committed to offering a variety of literary services to the Flagstaff public including:

  • One-to-one tutoring
  • Drop-in tutoring
  • Classes at our center
  • Classes in the community
  • Partnership for Literacy Rehabilitation (jail program)
  • Family Literacy

(from website thinkliteracy.org)

This non-profit is able to accomplish all of these with the help of volunteers and an efficient and effective governing board.  Each year The Literacy Center hosts a spelling bee to raise operating funds.  This year will be the 21st Annual Mountain Spelling Bee on April 27, 2017 where adult teams, usually from community businesses, enter to spell words.  Attendees enjoy a delicious dinner, “silent auction, raffle and competitive spelling entertainment”.

If you think you might be interested in serving at the Flagstaff Literacy Center contact Dianna at the office or attend their upcoming Thanksgiving Potluck this November 17, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at 2500 N. Rose Street, Ste 102.   All are welcome.
