HOW do you describe a modern day phenomena that shifts your paradigms and causes you to rethink how you have lived life to this point in time?

Graduation Party for International Students

The international house of Flagstaff, commonly known as “iHouse“, is a unique family-like community consisting of a global heart and mind!  Located within walking distance of Northern Arizona University, this international community contextually resides in a rich intermingling of cultures.  Most of the residents are students who learn to experience life together despite differences in family, governmental, religious and cultural backgrounds.  It’s a “bringing together” of the world.  As stated on their website:  “iHouse Flagstaff is where the world gathers in Flagstaff!”

Founders, Jason and Mariah Rohr, are no ordinary American couple.  Before getting married, Jason lived in Calucutta, India to establish an orphanage and Mariah spent extended time in Sierra Leone, Africa.  They also led several teams of young people to Nepal and other cross cultural experiences.  Because numerous students come to America to study and because they both loved living internationally, they began to envision a group home with a global vision!  Again, referring to their website, they state:  “The goal at iHouse is simple:  We take care of the basics, while you focus on what you came to Flagstaff for:  Scholarship and getting a fun taste of life in the American Southwest.”

FUN is what they know how to do extraordinarily well!  From bicycle trips on the rim of the Grand Canyon, to hikes in Sedona and Flagstaff’s San Francisco Peaks, to learning to rope, ride and experience an age old Southwestern ranch with real life modern day cowboys and cowgirls, to wake boarding with the community on Lake Mary, to numerous themed parties and barbecues in their beautiful backyard and home, to community progressive dinners, to line dancing and exercise classes to English classes and tutoring (and YES English can be FUN too!), to exploring the lava tube caves, to shopping trips to Phoenix, to Bearizona and Walnut Canyon and much much MORE, the iHouse is a lively adventure of international community and fun!

None of this could be possible without this husband and wife team who efficiently manage and maintain their vision, their love for internationals and the overall affairs of the iHouse.  All of which, I have had the privilege of working with and observing Jason and Mariah Rohr and their now three adorable children over the past 2 years and my life has been profoundly impacted!  Keeping life ‘simple’, focusing on the needs of people from around the world and maintaining a community that ‘feels’ and ‘interacts’ like family are some of the things that have refreshed my heart!   AND – YES – our paradigms (and stomachs – SMILE!) have shifted to a more global and international mindset!  We love international life and food!  We love being part of an international community – assisting students with international adjustments and learning about American culture together as a family – TOO MUCH FUN!
